Steens regularly tests its honey batches for Glyphosate residues

Glyphosate is the world’s most widely used herbicide (weed-killer). Residues of glyphosate have been found in honey globally, and as a result some countries and/or consumers have an interest in this being measured. The domestic Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) for glyphosate in New Zealand honey is 0.1 mg/kg (100 parts per billion), but different countries have differing MRLs and as such we test to the MRL requirements of the most strigent markets that we ship to.

We use an independent laboratory to test for the following residues that are the key herbicides that are used in NZ

  • Glyphosate
  • Glufosinate
  • Aminomethyl Phosphonic Acid

All of our honey complies with the strict import rules set by the USA and European governments regarding the presence of glyphosate in honeys.

This means that our honey passes the following countries maximum residue levels (MRLs)

CountryMRL (mg/kg)
USA0.175
NZ0.1
EU and UK0.05

NZ Governement Assurance

The NZ government’s Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) has recently issues a letter of assurance to International consumers outlining that studies had been conducted on NZ honey and they had found no food safety concerns with any of the NZ honey tested
